Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Info

Stand Up Paddle Boarding the Forward Stroke

One of the first things you learn as a Stand Up Paddler after finding your balance on the SUP Board is the forward stroke.  The forward stroke is the basic SUP Boarder stroke

Here are 8 step by step instructions on how to perform the forward stroke while Stand Up Paddling:
  1. Place the SUP Board in the water and find the balance point.  Usually it will be right in the middle of the Stand Up Paddle Board.  Stand on the board with both feet parallel and facing forward.
  2. Straighten your back and bend your knees slightly.
  3. Grasp the Stand Up Paddle with both hands.  When paddling your SUP Board on the left side your right hand should be the top hand on the paddle and vice versa.  Plant the SUP as far forward as possible keeping a loose grip with your lower hand and a straight elbow on the lower arm.  Your top hand should be near your temple when you plant your paddle.
  4. Lead with the top shoulder and pull your SUP from the stomach muscles while simultaneously driving the Stand Up Paddle downward with the top hand.  Be sure to place the paddle blade completely below the surface before applying power to the SUP.
  5. Keep the top hand out board and over the top of the lower hand to ensure a vertical orientation of the Stand Up Paddle shaft through the stroke.  This will keep the SUP Board moving straight.
  6. The Stand Up Paddle shaft should be sliding along the edge of the Stand Up Paddle board throughout the stroke.  By doing this you will keep your SUP blade as close as possible to the center line of your SUP Board, reducing the amount of turning effect during the stroke.
  7. If you find your SUP Board straying off course, switch your hand position and paddle on the other side of the board.  This will correct the motion of the Stand Up Paddle Board and keep you moving forward.
  8. Smile and have fun! Your officially a SUP Surfer!
